CRUCIAL PETITION LAUNCHED! Support Raven ReCentre’s Fight for Fair Treatment

We need your support!

It’s time to #RallyForRaven.

We have launched a petition calling on Minister Richard Mostyn and the Yukon Government to address their unfair treatment of Raven ReCentre. Yukoners have until Wednesday March 12 to sign. It will then be tabled in the Legislative Assembly.

What happened?

Last October, we discovered that the Yukon Government had quietly removed Raven from a recycling transportation contract without our knowledge or consent. They directed community depots to stop sending recyclable materials to us, instead funneling all materials to a single processor. Despite 35 years of service to the Yukon, and having contracts to process recycling for over 70 Yukon businesses (including government departments), we were suddenly excluded from processing community materials. In fact, we didn’t even find out that this was happening until we filed an ATIPP request.

WHY THIS MATTERS?

This arbitrary decision effectively transforms the Yukon’s community recycling system into a monopoly, which is no good for Yukoners or their government. It also jeopardizes over $350,000 in annual funding for our nonprofit organization that supports our:

  • 30 dedicated employees

  • School tours and educational programs

  • Community workshops across the territory

  • ReUseful Thrift Store that helps Yukoners with affordable goods

WHAT WE’VE DONE

We’ve sent multiple letters to Minister Mostyn and attempted over 34 communications with Community Services since May 2024, with little response. While we’ve recently met with government representatives, they’ve given no indication they’re willing to address our concerns with Community Depot material.

That’s why we’ve filed a complaint with the Yukon Ombudsman.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Our petition calls on the government to publicly disclose the reasons behind these actions and amend our transfer payment agreement to include community depot recycling materials. They need to return Raven to the transportation contract, and inform community depots that they can once again send their materials to us.

We deserve fairness, transparency and the right to continue serving all Yukoners as we have for decades. Minister Mostyn needs to hear that Yukoners support Raven!

HOW TO SIGN

Yukoners can sign the petition at Raven ReCentre during our regular business hours: 9am to 5pm. We will let you know as other locations become available, and if you have disability issues, contact us and we will bring the petition to you!

And if your organization or business is interested in hosting a petition sheet, let us know.

Let’s #RallyForRaven!
